In a world where medical trauma and anxiety are all too common, the power of a compassionate healthcare provider can be truly transformative. At My Sexual Health, we are privileged to share a story that highlights the profound impact of empathy, respect, and informed consent in the medical field.

Heartfelt Testimonial: A Journey towards Healing with Dr. Jireh Serfontein

We recently received a touching testimonial from a patient who, for 16 years, lived with the trauma and fear stemming from past medical experiences. These encounters had left them filled with anxiety, particularly towards medical consultations that felt invasive or unconsented. It was only through the compassionate care of Dr Jireh Serfontein, a valued member of the My Sexual Health team, that they began to heal and reclaim their autonomy over their medical decisions.

Patient's Experience:

The change began when they met Dr Serfontein, who the patient describes as "an angel" who transformed their experience by truly embodying the principles of consent and empathy. Dr Serfontein’s approach was gentle—she always asked for permission, explained every procedure thoroughly, and respected the patient's emotional boundaries. This respectful approach marked the beginning of a new chapter in the patient’s life, turning past traumas into a journey of recovery and self-discovery.

Here’s what the patient shared in their letter:

"I met the most amazing doctor, one who truly understood and practiced consent. We discussed all my issues, which were still pretty awkward for me, and then she ASKED me if I would be comfortable if she examined me. She explained every step, and asked before she touched me. I thought I would be fine because she was so nice, but I hid under my arms to hide my face the instant she touched me and became incredibly anxious. She IMMEDIATELY stopped, covered me, and said she won’t proceed because of my distress. I was embarrassed and tearful, but I knew that I would see her again.

Later, that angel of a doctor asked me about my last pap smear and I anxiously began to cry. She did not force me into it but had me do my own HPV swab at home. She later organised deep sedation to insert my Mirena so that it wouldn’t be a traumatic experience for me. At 44, I went for my first mammogram after she discussed it with me. I never told her my full story, but this is it. Thank you MSH for training your doctors so well. I wish ALL doctors were this conscious."

Patient-Centered Care

This testimonial not only underscores the importance of patient-centered care but also serves as a powerful reminder of how healthcare can and should be practiced. We are deeply grateful to our patient for sharing their story and to Dr Serfontein for her exemplary care.
