What Are Dilators?

& Why Might You Need One?

If penetration feels painful, impossible, or scary… you are not alone.

Dilators are gentle tools that help your body learn that penetration doesn’t have to hurt. They are commonly used for:

- Vaginismus

- Painful intercourse (dyspareunia)

- Post-surgical recovery or pelvic radiation

- Building sexual comfort after trauma or menopause

My Sexual Health Dilators are the only vaginal dilators in

South Africa with a NAPPI Code.

This means they’re officially listed on the National Pharmaceutical Product Interface (NAPPI) system - a classification used by medical aids and healthcare providers across South Africa.

In simple terms, a NAPPI Code allows these dilators to be recognised as a legitimate medical product. It can make it easier to claim from medical aid and signals that the product meets stringent quality and regulatory standards.

MSH Dilators are produced locally, right here in South Africa, by a licensed medical manufacturer.

Unlike many imported alternatives that are formally registered,

MSH Silicone Dilators are:

✔️ Medically recognised

✔️ Affordably priced

How to Use your a Dilator

Step 1: Understand Your Body & Set Goals

Before you begin, take a moment to learn about your pelvic muscles and vaginal anatomy. Understanding the structures involved can help you feel more confident. Set personal goals - these could be:

- Comfortable tampon use

- Painless gynaecological exams

- Enjoying penetrative sex

Step 2: Prepare Your Space

Choose a time and place where you feel calm and safe. Have your supplies ready:

- Dilator(s)

- Water-based lubricant

- Towel or cushion

- Mirror (optional)

- Numbing cream (if prescribed)

Wash your hands and your dilator with warm, soapy water. Avoid harsh chemicals.

Step 3: Relaxation & Arousal

Relaxation is key. Try these before starting:

- Deep breathing: In for 2 counts, out for 4. Continue for 5 minutes.

- Body scan: Release tension in your body, especially your pelvic area.

- Arousal techniques: Clitoral stimulation or using a vibrator can make dilation easier. Arousal increases blood flow and natural lubrication. See below for our recommended vibrators for clitoral stimulation.

- Numbing cream: Apply gently to the vulva and vaginal opening 10 minutes before use, if prescribed.

Step 4: Begin with the Smallest Dilator

Start with Size 1 (or as recommended).

  • Warm the dilator in water (test on wrist)

  • Lie on your back, knees bent, legs open

  • Apply lots of water-based lube to both the dilator and your vaginal opening

  • Rest the tip of the dilator at the entrance and breathe

  • When ready, gently insert just beyond the first ring of muscles

  • Pause if there’s discomfort. Breathe and let the body adjust

  • Keep the dilator in for 30 minutes

If it inserts easily, you may try a larger size or move up after 5–10 minutes

If guided by a pelvic physio, follow their recommendations for angles or exercises during use.

Step 5: Removal & Cleaning

  • Wait until you're fully relaxed

  • Gently remove the dilator

  • You may feel a burning or stretched sensation - that’s normal

  • Apply soothing cream or lubricant afterward (e.g. Femagene Soothing Gel or Pjur Woman Silicone Lube)

  • Wash the dilator with warm water and soap, dry thoroughly, and store it in a clean space

Step 6: Progress at Your Pace

As comfort increases, move gradually to larger sizes. Half sizes available (for example our werable stub dilators) can help reduce the jump between standard sizee. The goal is that the largest dilator should insert as comfortably as the smallest.

Why Choose MSH Silicone Dilators?

why we have sold 10,000 and counting!

Because you deserve tools that are safe, effective, and created by someone who truly understands what you're going through.

Designed by South Africa’s Leading Sexologist

The MSH Silicone Dilators were developed by Dr Elna Rudolph, South Africa’s leading clinical sexologist and the Clinical Head of My Sexual Health. After years of working with patients who couldn’t afford imported dilators - or couldn’t find any at all - she took matters into her own hands.

Dr Rudolph partnered with a model-maker (yes, the kind who usually builds architectural models!) to create a local, affordable, medical-grade dilator that was:

- Gentle enough for beginners

- Firm enough to make real progress

- Designed specifically for people experiencing pain during sex

Today, these dilators are trusted by professionals across the country and have already helped thousands of people move from fear and frustration to comfort, confidence, and connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt?

Not if used correctly. You might feel some pressure or slight discomfort at first, but it should never be painful. The goal is gentle stretching - not pushing through pain. Breathe, go slowly, and stop if anything feels too intense. It’s okay to take your time.

How long does it take to work?

Everyone is different. Some people notice progress within a few weeks, while others need several months. What matters is consistency, not speed. Be kind to your body - this is a process, not a race.

How often should I use my dilator?

Start with once a day for 10–15 minutes. As your comfort increases, aim for 30 minutes per session, 3–4 times a week. If you’re using your goal size comfortably, you can reduce frequency and maintain progress.

Can I sleep with my dilator in?

Yes - if you're comfortable and relaxed enough. Many people find success sleeping with smaller dilators or Stub Dilators, often using tight underwear or leggings to hold them in place. Start slow and listen to your body.

What if I get stuck or feel like I’m not progressing?

Plateaus are common - and temporary. Take a break if needed, revisit breathing and relaxation, or step back to a smaller size for a few days. If you’re still feeling stuck, it might be helpful to see a pelvic floor physiotherapist for personalised support.

How do I know when to move up a size?

If you can insert your current size easily, without resistance or emotional stress, you’re probably ready to try the next one. Some people also use two sizes in a single session - starting with the smaller and then progressing to the next.

What’s the benefit of half sizes?

Half sizes are perfect for gentle, gradual progress. If the jump between two standard sizes feels too big, a half size gives your body a chance to adapt slowly, reducing fear and discomfort. Our stub dilators are exactly half size up from the standard dilators.

Can I walk around with a dilator?

Yes - that’s exactly what Stub Dilators are for! They’re shorter, with in-between widths, and designed to be worn while standing, walking, or going about your day. They can be used for passive stretching while you're busy with other things.

When should I involve my partner?

Only when you feel emotionally and physically ready. A good starting point is when you’re comfortable inserting a Size 5 dilator. You can gradually introduce them into the process - guide their hand, let them observe, and communicate openly throughout.

How do I know if I’m ready for sex?

You’re ready when you can insert a dilator that’s similar in size to your partner’s penis without pain or panic.

Still unsure? Use a string to measure the girth of the penis and compare it to your dilator. Start slowly, communicate clearly, and follow your body’s cues.

Once you're ready to move from dilator practice to penetration, you can switch from a water-based lubricant (used during dilation) to a silicone-based lubricant for partnered sex. Silicone lubes are long-lasting, gentle, and ideal for reducing friction - especially helpful if you're still building confidence or navigating any lingering sensitivity. See our recommended options below.

What position is best for first-time penetration?

Being on top often gives you the most control over depth and speed. But if that feels awkward, lying on your back and guiding your partner slowly toward you can work just as well. Replicate your usual dilation routine as a lead-in.

Do I still need to dilate if I’m having sex regularly?

It depends on frequency and comfort. If you're having pain-free intercourse at least 3 times per week, you may not need to dilate anymore. If sex is irregular or still slightly uncomfortable, keep up your dilation routine for maintenance.

What if I experience burning or discomfort afterward?

A slight burning feeling can happen - it's usually from stretched muscles or irritated nerves. Try soothing the area with Femagene Soothing Gel, a water-based lube, or the Pjur Woman Silicone Lubricant. You can also reapply any cream prescribed by your doctor.

Should I see a pelvic floor physiotherapist?

Yes - especially if progress is slow, pain persists, or you're unsure of your technique. These professionals specialise in treating conditions like vaginismus and can make a world of difference. Find a qualified pelvic floor physiotherapist in your area.

Should I see a pelvic floor physiotherapist?

That’s valid - and so common. This isn’t just physical. It can stir up emotions, memories, and fears. Go gently. Celebrate small wins. And if it feels like too much, reach out. You're not alone, and healing is always possible with the right support. Find a qualified sex therapist or psychologist in your area.
