What sets silicone dilators apart from the rest?

Let's explore their unique advantages:

  1. Softness and Suppleness: Unlike plastic or glass dilators and other household items often used in the past, our silicone dilators offer a soft and supple tip. This feature has earned them high praise from our patients, who have found them far more comfortable. Additionally, the softness minimises the risk of reflex muscle spasms that the cold surfaces of plastic or glass objects can trigger.
  2. High-Quality Material: Our dilators are made using Sorta Clear 40, the highest-quality material available for this purpose. This body-safe silicone rubber boasts a shore A hardness of 40, exceptional tear and tensile strength, and is specifically designed to promote comfort and safety during use. Each dilator is individually cast and cured around an encased core or 'spine' to enhance rigidity while retaining a soft tip.
  3. Sterilisation and Packaging: We prioritise the safety and hygiene of our products. After manufacturing, each dilator is individually sterilised using medical autoclaves and carefully packaged before being supplied to our patients. We recommend keeping the dilators sealed in their sterile packaging until they are ready for use.
  4. Easy Cleaning: Cleaning the silicone dilators is a breeze. You can use regular fragrance-free soap or the soap from the Femagene range, along with warm water, to clean them. Rinse them thoroughly and dry them before storing them in a cool and dry place.

Silicone dilator sizes

Our standard pack of silicone dilators includes sizes one (1) which is the size of a tampon, up to size five (5) which is the size of an average penis.

We also offer a size six (6) and a size seven (7) dilator for women whose partners have a larger penis. In addition, we have individual dilators available for those who don't require the entire set.

Furthermore, we have "stub dilators" up to size eight (8), designed with a shorter length and a slightly different shape to provide enhanced comfort and convenience when wearing them for extended periods.

Success rates using silicone dilators

Our MSH doctors have observed remarkable progress in patients using our dilators. On average, individuals reach the number four (4) and five (5) dilators within three (3) to four (4) weeks of consistent use, coupled with prescribed medications and visits to our specialist pelvic function physiotherapists.

Alternative treatments like Botox or more intensive psychological therapies may be recommended for those who face challenges in their progress. Still, they are required in only a fraction of cases (approximately 1 out of 20).

Beyond vaginismus

The effectiveness of our dilators extends beyond treating vaginismus. They have been instrumental in addressing a wide range of conditions, including pelvic surgery recovery, post-radiation therapy for genital and rectal cancers, transgender patients with neo-vaginas, intersex conditions requiring vaginal construction or stretching, women unable to use tampons, individuals experiencing sexual difficulties due to prolonged abstinence, menopausal symptoms, and skin conditions like lichen sclerosis and lichen planus. They have also proven beneficial for post-childbirth recovery and alleviating pain during anal intercourse.

How to use silicone dilators

To ensure the best outcomes, we recommend following these guidelines when using our Silicone Dilators:

  1. Consultation: It's essential to consult with a healthcare professional experienced in sexual health or pelvic floor therapy before using the dilators. They can provide personalised guidance, assess your condition, and recommend the appropriate size and treatment plan. Book an appointment with one of our MSH Physios here.
  2. Lubrication: Always use a high-quality lubricant when inserting the dilators. This helps reduce friction and discomfort, making the process smoother. Find a lubricant on our online store.
  3. Relaxation Techniques: Practice calming exercises such as deep breathing, meditation, or pelvic floor relaxation techniques before and during the dilator insertion. This can reduce tension and promote a more comfortable experience. If you would like additional support you can book an appointment with a MSH Therapist here.
  4. Gradual Progression: Start with the smallest comfortable dilator and gradually work to larger sizes. Please listen to your body and do not rush the process. Each size should be used for a sufficient period until you feel comfortable moving to the next size.
  5. Regular Use: Consistency is critical. Aim to use the dilators regularly, following the guidance provided by your healthcare professional. Depending on your treatment plan, this may be daily or several times a week.
  6. Patience and Persistence: Be patient with yourself and understand that progress may vary from person to person. It's normal to initially encounter some discomfort or resistance, but with regular use and persistence, the muscles and tissues can gradually adapt and relax.
  7. Communication and Support: Open conversations are crucial if you use the dilators with a partner. Discuss your feelings, fears, and progress with your partner, and involve them as appropriate. Seeking the guidance of a sex therapist or counsellor can also be beneficial in navigating any emotional or relational challenges.
