Delene van Dyk is a professional nurse, with a specific interest in sexual and mental health, a psychosexual counsellor and educator and public speaker. She dedicated the past 30 years professionally to a combination of mental health, sexual health and education, touching the lives of thousands of people worldwide.

She is well known for her internationally acknowledged adult sexuality education model, Binaries and Boxes (or Not!), sensitising health care and other service providers, individuals and communities, to have an increased understanding of sexual and gender identity and diversity.

Delene’s been involved in private practice since 2005. Lately she focusses specifically on sexuality and gender, assisting and supporting individuals, families, couples, throuples +, to understand and find meaning in the challenges they are faced with, their healing process, relationships, intimacy and connection with the self and significant others.

Past and present projects

  1. Working in and consulting to the NGO sector since 2005 as a counsellor, mentor, sensitisation trainer and project manager.
  2. Developing sensitisation training and content for various sexual and mental health related curricula and providing training and mentoring for various institutions in South Africa, regionally and the rest of Africa. Countries include Ethiopia, Botswana, Eswatini, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Up to date, Delene trained more than 30 000 individuals.
  3. Keynote speaker, oral and poster presentations and workshops facilitated at various international conferences and symposia, including Argentina, Czech Republic, Mexico, Portugal, Singapore, Vietnam, and USA.
  4. Core member of PsySSA’s Sexuality and Gender Division developing the PsySSA Practice Guidelines for Psychological Professionals Working With Sexually And Gender-Diverse People (similar to APA Guidelines).
  5. Co-author, Health Care Provision for MSM, SW and People who use drugs. Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation.
  6. Member of PsySSA (Psychological Society of Southern Africa) and member of PsySSA SGD (Sexuality and Gender Division).
  7. Member and past president elect of SASHA (Southern African Sexual Health Association).
  8. Interviewed for various media platforms, including radio, TV, and podcasts.
  9. Public and invited speaker at various events.
  10. Pandora se Doos, an on-stage edutainment show, offered in Pretoria and Cape Town.
